Zlatograd – Thermes Border Crossing

The Zlatograd – Thermes border crossing is relatively new, opening in January 2010, an important route south to the Mediterranean coast, the crossing facilitates tourism but also economic growth on both sides of the border. The region has a high rate of unemployment. Zlatograd is a town in southern-central Bulgaria. The crossing point connects Bulgaria with Xanthi in Greece.

The border is at the top of a remote mountain pass and the border control facilities of both countries are shared with the passport booths being next to one another. I approached the border from Bulgaria and used the local hill top church as an observation point, I did not cross into Greece.

Looking through the fence into Greece
Looking down the border marked by small painted stones.
Looking up the border towards the church, line of stones marks the border.

The Church

The Church of Saints Constantine and Eleanor is on a hill west of the border crossing and offers a good viewing point. It was built in May 2006 being funded by citizens of the villages either side of the border.
