Düzce

Achna (Turkish: Düzce) is an abandoned village in the Famagusta District of Cyprus. It is just north of the Buffer Zone and it is under the de facto control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It was an exclusively Greek Village, with the main industry supporting it being the growing of potatoes in red, iron rich soil which surrounded it. After the 1974 Turkish invasion, its displaced inhabitants built a new village Dasaki Achnas, near the old location, within the confines of the Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area. It is well-known for its football club Ethnikos Achna FC, that won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006.

It is not possible to visit this place, unlike Varosha which has begun to be reopened since 2017. However it is possible to view the abandoned village from a distance when travelling towards the Strovilia crossing point. I visited this point as part of the IBRG CYBEX-24.

Date of Visit: 02 October 2024
