Berggasthaus Ederkanzel is one of those border oddities what makes border visits so fascinating. Not far from the picturesque Leutasch Gorge (Lautaschklamm) a small mountain inn is situated right on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria. Beautifully situated at an altitude of 1,208 meters, the sun terrace offers spectacular panoramic views across the expansive Leutasch Valley, the Ferchenbach and Isar Valleys, and the impressive rock formations of the Wetterstein and Karwendel Mountains.

It is possible to hike to the inn by several trails or to drive by car. The Ederkanzel was officially opened as a coffee station in 1939. A hunting platform and an observation post (demolished in 1954) had been on the site prior to that. The inn remained isolated, with electricity being connected in 1968 and a road being built in 1970. The inn is known for its local Bavarian cuisine and unique location. It has been owned by the Tiefenbrunner family from the beginning.

We visited this point as part of the IBRG LIVCO-25 expedition. Our focus was on the border that actually cuts through the inn, with the restaurant being in Germany and the terrace and garden being in Austria. In order to enter the restaurant/bar area you need to cross the border and re enter Germany through the door into the building. There are border related signs and BM#278 marked with a “T” for Tyrol. More border oddities can be found on my Oddities and Extremities page. We took the opportunity to enjoy the lovely local food.
