Ebmath-Hranice Border Crossing

Ebmath (or Ebmatt) is a small village in Saxony, Germany, near the Czech border, part of the Eichigt municipality in the Vogtlandkreis district, it is close to Hranice (German name: Roßbach) which is a town in Cheb District in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. This border crossing is where Rossbacher Str crosses the border.

It is a rural area. On the Czech side there are duty free shops which sell alcohol and cigarettes as well as Vignettes for motorway use in the Czech Republic. As a Schengen border there are normally no controls but in 2021 COVID protocols and a concern with illegal migration meant controls were more evident across the EU. Since May 2025 Czech travellers heading to Germany, particularly Bavaria and Saxony, were subject to increased checks at land border crossings as German authorities tighten migration controls. We visited this point as part of the IBRG LIVCO-25 expedition and police checks were ongoing.

Signs galore!

Border markers

The Czech- German border is extremely well demarcated with border markers being placed close together. Due to time constraints we focused on a few to the east of the border crossing.

A clear path from the road led through the trees. Border markers were visible as far as one could see.

Doubrava (Aš)

Doubrava (German: Grün) is a village in Karlovy Vary Region, Czech Republic. It is one of the nine districts of the town of Aš. In 2001 the village had a population of 94. It was a short drive from the border crossing and was a place we passed through going to the larger town of Aš where we planned to have an evening meal – Goulash of course. Opposite the local pub was a unique collection of old border signs, an added bonus for this group of European border enthusiasts.
