Schellenberg Wand

The Schellenberg Wand is an imposing sandstone rockface on the Austria Liechtenstein border. Located on the outskirts of Feldkirch, Austria. A short but steep climb led us to the Felsbandweg a popular hiking trail that hugs the cliff face of the mountains Hinterer Gantenstein (695m) and Eschnerberg (698m), classed as a moderate hike, it felt harder being at the end of a long day and the penultimate border POI before heading to our hotel in Malbun. The path along the Austrian-Liechtenstein border was a famous smugglers’ route during the World Wars. Today, it is primarily known as an adventurous hiking trail for climbers and in our case border enthusiasts due to the many border markers carved and painted into the rock face.

We followed a circular path along the cliff face and then back along Rütteleweg to our parked car. We did not have the time to visit all the markers but were able to see many particularly in the sections BM#72 to BM#80 with many intermediate markers too. These markers were very close together. We visited this point as part of the IBRG LIVCO-25 expedition.  More border oddities can be found on my Oddities and Extremities page.

Hike

An initial steep route up, not helped by missing the path followed by an undulating path along side and sometimes under the rock face.

Bruno, clearing the undergrowth off a marker. Austrians are born mountaineers.
