The largest mountain range in Cyprus stretching cross a third of the island, is the Troodos mountains. Located at the western side of Cyprus, its highest peak also known as Chionistra, is 1,952 meters high. The top of Mount Olympus, in Cyprus, is capped by a NATO monitoring station and closed to the public. Cyprus is one of a handful of countries whose highest point is occupied by a military complex with very difficult access. (Other countries like this include Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, and Laos). I visited this point in 2001 but subsequently had my film confiscated by the TRNC officials for photographing the then off limits Varosha, hopefully I will keep my photos this time. I visited this point as part of the IBRG CYBEX-24
Troodos Station is the oldest remaining British Military asset in Cyprus. The station was formed in 1878 when Cyprus was ceded to Britain by the Ottoman Empire to counter Russian expansion into the Near East. The Signals Station is operated by personnel from Golf Section, Joint Service Signal Unit (Cyprus). At the time of my visit, base security was undertaken by The Rifles Regiment.
In addition to the RAF base these is also a NATO monitoring base guarded by Greek Cypriot forces.
