The Limnitis – Kato Pyrgos Border Crossing is car only and is the most northern of the crossing points. The respective checkpoints are on the edge of the buffer zone. In order to use our southern Cyprus hire car we needed to buy mandatory TRNC third party insurance (35 EUR for a month). The buffer zone is wide at this point. Checks were quick and straightforward. Observation posts were visible on the hillsides.
The opening of the Limnitis-Yesilirmak crossing satisfies a decades-long demand by Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot area residents to shorten travel times across the divide there and spur the region’s development. The crossing gives the Kato Pyrgos villagers access to the capital Nicosia via a direct route that leads through the northern part of the island, reducing a 200-kilometer round trip to a 70-kilometer trip and cutting the time by about 90 minutes. The North

The Buffer Zone
It is not encouraged to stop within the buffer zone and this stretch was within a valley which made it difficult in any case. UN OP #08 was on the hillside overlooking the road.
The South
The south checkpoints were straightforward and quick.

As you approach the TRNC checkpoint there will be an office where you can buy the insurance. The document will be checked each time you enter the north.

Yes, when travelling to the north for the first time it is necessary to buy the insurance from the office. There are clear signs. On each subsequent visit the insurance certificate is checked.

There were no issues with taking a hire car into the north, although it is at your risk as the south will not cover. You must buy TRNC insurance at the border but have not heard how effective it is in terms of an accident.
