Lazaretto – Ankaren border crossing

The Italy – Slovenia border reaches the coast just south of the Italian town of Lazaretto. The border at this point is noteworthy, not only because of the road crossing point between Italy and Slovenia, but also that it is the location of the last border marker located on the beach.

We located the first border marker when we visited the ATITSI tripoint, so there was a sense of an end of a journey when we reached the border at the Gulf of Trieste. I visited this point as part of the IBRG SITEX-23 expedition.

Road border crossing

There are redundant border control facilities either side of the border. The Slovenian ones have been repurposed into a petrol station. BM 91/37 located on the western side of the road, and there is the remnants of border fencing on the eastern side. National signs are situated either side of the border.
