The Krakūnai-Rotskishki Border Crossing is for Lithuanian and Belorussian citizens only and open for limited hours only. We required a permit to visit and take photos. The border crossing although small was really interesting especially because of the closeness of the Belorussian facilities. Shortly after Lithuania declared independence, Russian special forces harrassed the newly established Lithuanian Border Guards and on 19 May 1991, Gintaras Žagunis, an officer at the Krakūnai border crossing point at the Lithuania–Belarus border, was shot dead while on duty. He received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Cross of Vytis, which is the second highest military award of Lithuania
