Medininkai Border Crossing is located only 25 km. east of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. It is a major border crossing point between the 2 countries and as an external EU border has full security in place. In 1991 several Lithuanian border guard officers were shot and killed by Soviet Special Forces as Lithuania attempted to establish its external borders. We arrived late at this border post and it was already dark. As we had permits we were able to go right up to the border. The Belorussian border guard took exception to this but could do anything as we did not cross the line.
