The Infante Rivarola – Cañada Oruro border crossing is the primary international land gateway between Paraguay and Bolivia. Situated in the remote Gran Chaco region, marking the northern terminus of Paraguay’s National Route PY09 (Transchaco Highway) and connecting to Bolivia via Villamontes (~118 km north), roads are paved. A modern, integrated multipurpose border complex was inaugurated on April 1, 2023, by Bolivian National Customs (spanning over 22 hectares to handle immigration, customs, and health services in one location). Paraguay also coordinates adjacent customs and port facilities.
International buses and freight use this crossing. It’s remoteness means that few tourists transit here. I visited this area as part of the IBRG SATEX -25 expedition, this border crossing is located near to the ARBOPY tripoint.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to cross the border with a hire car (common with most countries in the region), so we explored the Paraguayan side. Border officials were friendly and welcoming.
