Barra del Chuy (UY)/Barra do Chuí (BR)

The Chuy/Chuí border between Uruguay and Brazil is famous as the town is divided by a shared double avenue (Avenida Brasil in Uruguay and Avenida Uruguai in Brazil). Pedestrians and local traffic move freely across the street between the two countries without physical barriers. After spending time exploring the town we drove a short distance south west to explore a rural crossing across the small Chuí Stream.

We were running out of daylight and many of the POI’s in this area were out of reach as we were unable to take our hire car across the border into Brazil. We were able to see the Brazilian lighthouse across the border, but across the dunes, the mouth of the Chuí Stream which is the southernmost and westernmost point of the Brazilian coast, as well as both the northernmost and easternmost point of the Uruguayan coast however remained unvisited. The southernmost point of Brazil, 1.7km upstream was visited but it was too dark to take good photos.
