Bioceanic Bridge

The Bioceanic Bridge is a major cable-stayed infrastructure project spanning the Paraguay River to connect Carmelo Peralta (Paraguay) and Porto Murtinho (Brazil). The bridge spans approximately 1300 meters, featuring a main cable-stayed span alongside approach viaducts on both the Paraguayan and Brazilian banks. It serves as a vital link in the larger Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor, a roughly 3,800-to-3,900-kilometer road network (depending on the specific route and endpoints measured across the four participating countries) designed to connect the Atlantic port of Santos (Brazil) with the Pacific ports of Antofagasta and Iquique (Chile).

This was the third major infrastructure project we had visited on this trip, the first being the Integration Bridge spanning the Paraná River, between the towns of Presidente Franco (Paraguay) and Foz de Yguazu (Brazil) and the second being the Itaipu Dam, also spanning the Paraná River. I visited this point as part of the IBRG SATEX-25 expedition.

This was a border POI that we had not planned to visit, however our escape route from Bahia Negra involved a 30+ hour boat trip down the Rio Paraguay. This was our only option as all roads had been turned into deep mud following heavy rain meaning driving out was not an option. We therefore passed underneath the bridge on our way to Puerto Valle-Mi, the first place we could get a bus to Asunción. For further details of our boat journey click on the image below.

At the time of our visit there was a considerable amount of construction still to do, with the whole central span still to be completed. In July 2026 the 2 sides of the bridge were joined. Infrastructure works and border and customs facilities are ongoing.
